Uganda: Fagil Mandy Roots for Languages

1 December 2008

Kampala — STUDENTS need to learn more than one language so as to compete in the job market.

Fagil Mandy, an expert and education consultant, said "Let students learn foreign languages rather than their mother languages. This will enable them to move to other regions for gainful employment."

"By 2005, over 2400 teachers had joined southern-Sudan to provide services to the people. It is a year since CHOGM and there is a free open market for graduates to move and work anywhere." Mandy emphasised.

He made the remarks on Friday while officiating at the 19th graduation ceremony at the Home Economics and Teachers College Luteete.

The students graduated in tailoring, computer applications, embroidery and craft, catering and special cookery, and early childhood development.

Mandy praised universal primary education and universal secondary education, saying Ugandans should take advantage of the programmes.

Edith Sserwada, the director of the school, said 70% of the graduates started their own nursery schools and over 65% have been employed.
