Uganda: Kenya Impounds 40 Malaba Cows

Kampala — KENYAN authorities have impounded over 40 head of cattle in Malaba in an operation in an attempt to rid the town of roaming animals.

The Malaba town clerk, Tom Harison Kwasi, said the owners had to pay a fine of Ksh1000 (sh25,000) and Ksh500 (sh12,500) for each cow and goat respectively.

Eight head of cattle were not claimed and were auctioned at Kocholya Market on Friday. Most of them were rounded up at the customs parking yard and on the highway.

The animals destroy the greenery, litter the verandas, roads and cause accidents, Kwasi said.

The operation, he said, was prompted by the embarrassment caused when President Yoweri Museveni made a stop-over on his way to Nairobi.

The President's convoy, he said, had to wait for some time as security men drove away the animals which had formed kraals in the middle of the road. Cattle from Uganda often cross the border in the morning to graze in Kenya and return in the evening.

Attempts by the Malaba Uganda town council to remove the animals from the streets have on several occasions been opposed by some councillors who also keep cattle.
