Kampala — KENYA's telecom giant, Safaricom, has for the second time running, emerged east Africa's most respected company, a survey of chief executives (CEO), has indicated.

The survey carried out by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) put Kenya Airways in second and Zain emerged third. The winners received their honours at an awards gala held at Kampala Serena Hotel on November 28.

"We appreciate the CEOs who have respected us, but most importantly the Safaricom subscribers who have given us the privilege and through their support have enabled us receive this award," Peter Arina, the Safaricom chief commercial officer, said.

The 9th edition of the survey organised by PWC and the Nation Media Group had over 180 chief executives participating. The companies were judged according to market presence, innovation and market expansion.

This year's awards were changed with the region category replacing the industry awards.

In the country's category, telecommunications company, MTN, emerged the most respected company in Uganda followed by Mukwano Group and Zain.

In Kenya, Safaricom was again voted the most respect company followed by Kenya Airways and Equity Bank was third.

Rwanda was participating for the first time and in that category, MTN Rwanda scooped the award after edging Bralilwa Breweries to second place and Serena Hotel coming third.

In Tanzania, Precision Air was the CEO's most respected company followed by IPP Media, while Vodacom Tanzania was third.

Charles Musene, the PWC CEO, said the awards were organised to recognise companies that operate at a distinctive level.

"Drivers of respect the themes have been around growth in terms of products and enhancing geographical footprint. These businesses have also demonstrated leadership in terms of talent and innovation," he added.

He said that against the background of the current global financial markets turmoil the drivers of respect next year will change.

"What will be recognized are those companies that have been able to deal with the turmoil," he said.
