Angola: Parliament Speaker Back Home

1 December 2008

Luanda — The National Assembly (Angolan Parliament) speaker, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, returned home Monday, after attending the 31st conference of the African Parliamentary Union, held from November 29-30 in Kampala, Uganda.

Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos received welcoming greetings on arrival from Parliament's second secretary, Joana Lina.

The African Parliamentary Union focused mainly on "Development of agriculture in Africa, in view of the world food crisis and contribute to reduce poverty" and "Promotion of health in the continent, through the fight of Hiv/Aids".

Addressing the session, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos spoke of the Government's effort to reduce poverty and fight Hiv/Aids.

On the fringes of the meeting, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos held meetings with African counterparts, with stress to the audiences he granted to the delegations of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Equatorial Guinea.

The situation in the eastern region of the DRC and the need for reinforced cooperation topped the audiences.

This was the first time Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos attends an international event in his capacity as speaker of the National Assembly.

The Angolan delegation to the conference included the MPs Norberto dos Santos Kwata Kanawa, Cristóvão da Cunha, Lúcia Tomás and Sónia Nece (ruling MPLA party) and Miraldina Jamba (oppositium UNITA).
