Students at the University of Botswana (UB) Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) have accused the university management of trying to use the students to protect lecturers, who allegedly sell exam papers to students.
This follows the announcement that third year Diploma in Accounting and Business Studies (DABS) students will have to re-write the economics and taxation and business tests this weekend to make up for the exam that was leaked in May this year, after some students were sold the papers allegedly by some of their lecturers.
Speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation, a student told the Monitor that a few students were caught revising examination papers that were exactly the same as the ones that were to be written. The student explained that the results revealed that many students might have had access to the exam paper and therefore they were required to re-sit that test.
"It happens that when one student has bought a paper he or she would sell that to other students to recoup their money. The paper ends up circulating and almost all students having access to it," she said. She however stated that instead of punishing the students they should be exposing the lecturers who peddle these papers.
"They must deal with the rot in their administration before thinking of punishing students," the student said.
All third year students from all campuses around the country will rewrite the examinations over the weekend.
Responding to the allegations, UB acting director of public affairs Ray Mangope said they are still waiting for a report from people tasked with investigating the alleged selling of exam papers in the university. "The examination issue is still under investigation," he said. Mangope pointed out that he could not discuss details as that could jeopardise their case.
This is not the first time university lecturers have been accused of selling exam papers to the students, which caused many serious people to start questioning the credibility of students graduating from the local institution.
