Lagos — ABOUT 200 armed robbery suspects have lost their lives in gun battles with the police in Lagos and Ogun State commands in the last 10 months.

This is as Ogun State Police command has recovered about N13 milion cash from robbery suspects within the period.

Lagos Commissioner of Police and his Ogun State counterpart, Messrs Marvel Akpoyibo and Emmanuel Ayeni, respectively, disclosed this yesterday during an interactive session with the Chairman of Police Service Commission (PSC), Mr. Parry Osayande, at Zone two Onikan, Lagos.

According to Akpoyibo, 132 robbery suspects were killed while 417 robbery suspects were arrested in Lagos State within the period under review.

He also said that 1,040 vehicles were recovered from the hoodlums.

Briefing Osayande and his team, comprising the Secretary to PSC, Mr. Gamba Muwai, Dame Comfort Obi, Abu Daura and Dr. Ignatius Adaji, Akpoyibo said the police in Lagos were aware of the need to provide security to a mega city like Lagos.

Akpoyibo also said that about 12,812 ammunition were recovered by his command.

Also speaking during the PSC team's visit, Ayeni who led other senior police officers from Ogun State, said about 86 robbery suspects lost their lives in different encounters with policemen in the state.

He said that N13.18 million believed to be stolen by robbers at various points of the state, were recovered.

Ayeni told the PSC that policing a state like Ogun, which he described as home steads of great men like Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and others, was not an easy task.

He said that the command has dismissed about 61 policemen over extortion and indiscipline.

Both commissioners, however, told the PSC chairman of the need for more funds to enable them fight criminals in their respective states.

However, Osayande said he was in the zone to familiarise with men and officers of the zone, adding that promotion in the force would no longer be a favour but strictly on merit.
