Nigeria: Amuwo Odofin Youths Plan Cultural Carnival

Lagos — Youths in Amuwo Odofin Local government area of Lagos state have concluded plans to organise a cultural carnival on December 19.

The youths under the aegis of Amuwo Youths Organisation said that the carnival would be a reharsh of celebrated FESTAC 77 as youths from various parts of the country will converge on Festac Town to witness the event.

Unveiling the plan of the organisation at the Amuwo Odofin Local Government secretariat, the co-ordinator of the maiden carnival, Mr. Yinka Shotade said, "the event which will soon become an annual one at Amuwo Odofin will give the opportunity for the exchange of ideas and identifying the challenges of empowerment and social living in Amuwo Odofin.

He noted that it is an attempt to make the carnival a rich cultural heritage of Africans that was witnessed at the Festival of Arts and Culture Celebration---- FESTAC '77 in Amuwo Odofin."

Shotade added that his organisation has started identifying the mainstream of Nigerian Youths for the organisation of an annual carnival as a drive towards re-awakening the spirit of FESTAC '77. He said the carnival will accommodate platforms for public orientation, debates and discussions on current challenges and development with the aim of soliciting assistance and resource that could enhance productivity in the youths of the area.

Executive chairman of Amuwo Odofin Local Government, Comrade Ayodele Adewale lent credence to the celebration ongoing that it would be a bold initiative to rejuvenate the history of our great nation 31 years after the Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC 77) was held

Said he, "All over the world, all conscious people with a profound realisation of their history have continued to celebrate their culture not only as a reminder of where they are coming from, but as a pointer to where they are going".

He also commended the efforts of the organisation to have deemed it fit to organise such a programme at a time the efforts of the youths in Amuwo Odofin are much needed to transform the area socially, politically and economically.

He however advised the organizers to carry all youths in the area along in every aspect of the event.

He also urged them to use the carnival to bridge the various areas of disunity caused by the various socio-political backgrounds of the youths living in Amuwo Odofin.
