Angola: Minister Calls for Greater Dynamism in Recognising Patrimonial Goods

Benguela — Angola's Culture minister, Rosa Cruz e Silva, on Monday in Benguela Province defended the need for major engagement and dynamism of her sector in this province, so that local patrimonial goods be recognised by Angolans and afterwards get international assessment and acceptance.

The official who was speaking at a work meeting with the local managing board of the youth, culture and sports department and staff of the Archaeology Museum, considered as important this recognition of patrimonial good, so that they can be part of the world heritage list and protected by international authorities.

"The work that the culture sector will have to do will need another dynamic, comprising capable people so that the outlined goals can be achieved and not waste goods that have an incalculable value (...)", she emphasised.

For the minister of Culture, Benguela has what is needed to enlist patrimonial goods in the world heritage system.

She said that the sector is concerned with the country's 18 provinces, having into account that currently there is a movement of expansion and urban re-qualification countrywide and, therefore, the need for the sector to make efforts and perspectives in the task of preserving the national heritage, meant to be included in the world heritage indicative list.

Rosa da Cruz e Silva also said that the set of elements that can be verified and classed as historical must be well taken care of, so as to protect them from urban expansion or movement, for once classified they bring other values to the Angolan economy.

"It is necessary to work more and more so that be passed the testimony to the new generations and they can continue projecting the cultural values to higher positions, as the sector hopes that the patrimonial goods can cover various aspects and areas of culture, such as the way the peoples of Angola are related with the environment and among themselves", she said.

Rosa da Cruz e Silva also said that the Institute of National Heritage has recently carried out a training programme in all

18 provinces of the country, so that a greater dynamic be achieved in the survey, inventory and studies on patrimonial goods, so they can be more and more known and then selected for particular purposes, both from the perspective of Angolans and the world.

The minister, who is in the central Benguela Province for a two-day visit, is assessing the functioning of the sector.

She has already held a meeting with the deputy governor, Agostinho Estevão Felizardo, as well as visited the Archaeology Museum.
