South Africa: Zondo Begins His Rescue Mission

2 December 2008

Khabo Zondo's mission of ensuring Bay United remain in the top flight begins this weekend when he tackles his most recent employers, Bloemfontein Celtic, at the EPRU Stadium on Sunday.

Zondo, brought in to replace Serbian coach Vladislav Heric, who resigned from Umlilo last week, has a slight advantage as he knows down to the last man what he will be up against at the weekend.

Bay, Celtic and Free State Stars are all propping up the League table with seven points after 10 games and all need a full three points to begin distancing themselves from the relegation zone.

The 46-year-mentor does not lack experience having also occupied the position of assistant coach with Bafana Bafana and leading Golden Arrows to recovery long ago.

According to a report in the Herald newspaper, Zondo began training the squad yesterday afternoon.

"He wanted to see the boys during the session so that he could get the chance to see them in action and give him the opportunity to know what he will be working with," United spokesman Vuyo Mvoko told The Herald.

Zondo will continue with the same technical staff that operated under Heric, which includes Sydney Goba as team manager, assistant coach Jani Simulambo, goalkeeper coach Pernel McKop, equipment manager Bongani Kadeni and physiotherapist Wayne Damons.
