Sola Alabadan of Independent Newspapers won the Diamond Award for Media Excellence (DAME) in insurance reporting at the weekend, two weeks after he got the Nigerian Media Merit Award (NMMA) in the same category.
Daily Independent itself bagged the Newspaper of the Year Award for 2008 at the NMMA, a feat appreciated on Monday by both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Action Congress (AC) Governorship candidate in Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi.
Fayemi, in a letter to Daily Independent Editor, Ikechukwu Amaechi, who also carted home the NMMA Editor of the Year trophy, noted that "the Independent Newspaper titles have since their debut in the nation's media market proved to be leaders not only in graphic aesthetics but in news content.
"The titles have become veritable palaces of ideas, editorial astuteness and haven for illuminating columns. I am sure you will keep this tradition of excellence up as we will not deny your establishment our unfettered patronage."
Another letter written by PDP National Chairman, Vincent Ogbulafor, said: "The awards you carted away (from the NMMA) are eloquent testimony of your thoroughness, intellectualism and professionalism.
"We add that we at the PDP are not surprised though, knowing the quality of staff you have and the ethical standards you have set in the industry. We can only urge you not to rest on your laurels."
This is the third time Alabadan would receive the DAME prize, having done so in 2005 and 2006.
A graduate of Ondo State University, Ado Ekiti, he started his journalism career with the little known Alimosho Times, from where he joined The Punch in 2000, which he left for Nigerian Tribune in 2002.
Alabadan came over to the Independent Newspapers in 2006 as a Senior Correspondent.
