Botswana: Ramotswa Clubs Fight Over 'Muti' Again

Chippa Legodimo

2 December 2008

Traditionally, encounters between Ramotswa sides, Killer Giants and Letlapeng FC are never without drama. If it is not good football on the pitch, then it is a fight between supporters with players joining in sometimes.

The clash between the two sides on Saturday was full of drama and the referee had to stop proceedings three times because of crowd trouble. Eventually, Letlapeng won the duel 2-1.

On two occasions, the game was stopped when some supporters started wrestling at Letlapeng's goal posts for a black towel, which Killer Giants' fans believed was stopping their team from scoring.

The same towel caused a fracas during the Coca-Cola Cup match between the two clubs at the same venue, which was won by Letlapeng.

On Saturday, a Letlapeng official was lucky to leave the ground unhurt after he was attacked by Killer Giants supporters for spraying a concoction at the goal posts.

Angry Killer Giants' supporters came charging and forced the man to run onto the field to take cover between the players. But that did not stop the angry mob from invading the pitch. The fans were determined to hit him with beer bottles and stones and players acted quickly to calm them down.

On the field Letlapeng were clearly the better side and worthy winners. They showed intent to repeat their Coca-Cola Cup win right from the start but their strikers were too fancy and wasted easy chances. Letlapeng forced four corner kicks in five minutes and at the half hour mark, Steven Malele delivered a neat cross from the left but Larona Maotwe failed to capitalise.

Maotwe made amends a while later with a powerful spot kick to give the First Division newcomers a 1-0 lead. In the second half, Killer Giants were more determined but the opposition frustrated them by throttling the game in the midfield. Ex-Killer Giants' midfielder Lenyatso 'Tibe' Diseko was a real threat to his former teammates with his skill and pace. He dominated the engine room with support from Maotwe.

Pane Rakhobo finished off Killer Giants with less than fifteen minutes to go. Veteran Donald 'Coach' Mopako who had a difficult time against the likes of Boyboy Gaobolae and Patrick Magosi scored Killer Giants' consolation goal in the 83rd minute.
