Botswana: Team At UN Climate Meet

2 December 2008

Botswana has sent eight representatives to the 14th UN Climate Change Conference that started yesterday in Poznan, Poland. The conference ends on December 12.

Botswana is a signatory to the climate change treaty and the Kyoto Protocol, which prescribes targets and modalities for the implementation of the Climate Change Convention - UNFCCC.

Under the UNFCCC and the Kyoto Protocol, developed countries have to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases.

On the other hand developing countries, including Botswana have not had emission reduction commitments. Botswana is expected to report on the amount of emissions and submit a report outlining steps to reduce emissions and adapt to climate change.

Public relations officer at the department of meteorological services, Wada Motsamai said that last year's conference in Bali agreed on a Road Map to review the Kyoto Protocol and a shared vision for addressing climate change. One major review of the Kyoto Protocol, she said, is expected to introduce emission reduction targets for developing countries.

"Other key agenda items include the review of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) including carbon emissions trading and the implementation of the Nairobi Work Programme of 2006 on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change.

These issues are particularly relevant because Botswana is embarking on an accelerated expansion of the Energy Sector; implementing the new and enhanced agricultural programmes including ISPAAD, and other social programmes towards poverty reduction, sustainable development and disaster reduction measures," she said. The Botswana team is expected to return on December 14.
