Kampala — THE Global Pan African Movement has awarded women who have rendered extraordinary service to the nation.

The movement's executive director, Grace Kabayo, commended the winners whom she said are role models in Africa.

The award winners included Capt. Olive Zizinga, one of the first women to join the NRA liberation struggle as a fighter.

The late Rebecca Mulira was appreciated for community development and strengthening mothers' unity.

Mulira was one of the leading voices in promoting girl education in Uganda and initiating women development groups.

Betty Kanyamunyu was awarded for her efforts in promoting education, while Esther Kalimuzo was rewarded for her efforts in preaching behavioural change. She was one of the first activists to promote AIDS awareness.

Rwanda was awarded for being the first African country to have women as the majority in parliament.

The Swedish ambassador, Johnson Anders, commended the Rwandan and the Ugandan Government for turning their countries into role models in promoting women emancipation.

He urged African countries to invest in women to alleviate poverty.

The state minister for environment, Jessica Eriyo, said more women should be put in government positions, arguing that they are less likely to swindle funds.
