Uganda: Amazing Italian Jazz

Kampala — The Italian language and cultural week climaxed last Friday with a spectacular concert at the residence of the ambassador of Italy, His Excellency Pietro Ballero, in Kololo.

The show dubbed "Jazz Concert for the sea" featured the Andrea Pagani Trio, an Italian Jazz ensemble of international acclamation. Performing in Africa for the very first time, the youthful Italian jazz artistes staged an exhilarating show.

They treated their audience to sensational Italian jazz pieces blended with Blues, Soul and Afro-Cuban music. Pianist Andrea Pagani, the lead act won the admiration of the audience.

His piano produced swan-like sounds, whose purity could be felt flowing through one's veins. Jazz drummer/percussionist Alfredo Romeo also attracted attention because of his power of musical expression and feeling. Double bass player Francesco De Palma was also as attractive as his musical instrument, which was not very common to many Ugandan jazz music fans.

Beat of Africa, a cultural group led by Dr. Sylvia Tamusuza of Makerere University opened the show with Ugandan dances like Tamenha Ibuga (from Busoga), Runyege Ntogori (from Bunyoro) and Kizino from Kigezi.

Ballero gave a brief speech in which he called upon people, all over the world, to cherish peace, and avoid violence. The show was attended by several dignitaries including Hon. Okello Oryem and several members of the Diplomatic Corps.

The head of consul and culture at the Italian Embassy, Raniero Damuri took the credit for a well-organised concert. Dr. Benon Kigozi of Makerere University provided a faultless sound system.
