Uganda: Buganda Will Not Back Banyala, Baruuli Kings

Egessa Hajusu

2 December 2008

Kampala — BUGANDA will not support the installation of kings for the Banyala and the Buruuli, the kingdom's first deputy prime minister, Emmanuel Sendaula, has said.

Sendaula, however, said Buganda recognises the Ssabanyala and the Ssabaruuli as the cultural leaders of the two tribes.

He also said the Banyala and the Baruuli were free to practice their culture like the Bagisu living in Bugerere do.

Sendaula said Buganda had a government led by Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi, whom the cultural leaders of the Banyala and Baruuli are obliged to pay allegiance to.

"The politics meant to divide, weaken and disorganise the Buganda kingdom will not be allowed," Sendaula said.

He was addressing the Baganda living in Busia district at Lola Hotel in Busia town on Saturday.

Sendaula also said Buganda would continue fighting for federalism.

He appealed to the Baganda not to sit back and wait for the prosperity-for-all (Bonna bagaggawale) programme to take its course but to regard it as a supplement scheme for poverty reduction.
