Uganda: Netherlands to Support Child Education in North

2 December 2008

Kampala — THE Netherlands government will continue supporting the education of children in northern Uganda under the 'Rewrite the Future' programme.

Representatives from Save the Children Netherlands, Rinie' Vermeer and Birigit Van Delft, said their foreign affairs ministry would construct classrooms, provide desks and scholastic materials.

Rinie' said the Netherlands is aware of the many atrocities that took place in the north. He said the war destroyed many school buildings and scholastic materials.

"Netherlands has been supporting Uganda in many sectors but most importantly in security and education. Our government will continue supporting education until 2010," Rinie' said while handing over 40 classrooms to Lira district on Monday.

The Save the Children district manager, Charles Komakech, urged parents to educate children.

He said despite the fact that the donors were giving them some support, it was up to the local people to oversee the success of the education sector.

The Rewrite project will be implemented by Save the Children Uganda.

Komakech called upon the Lord's Resistance Army leaders to release the 1.5 million children still in captivity so that they go back to study.
