Nigeria: Homeless World Cup - Team Shock Italy

Lagos — A Nigerian selected by Search and Groom- Youth for Development Centre from the just concluded Street Soccer League Cup team comprising players from the slums in Lagos, Ajegunle, Abesan/Ipaja, Agege, Ikorodu, Ikeja and Ibadan are doing the country proud in Melbourne, Australia at the moment.

With five players and unable to have their three colleagues join them in Melbourne due to visa hitch, the team played 5 - 5 with Italy in the opening Group D preliminary round of games yesterday at a packed Federation Square Street Soccer Stadium.

Down with two goals in the early minutes, Lukmmon Jimoh reduced the score to 1-2 at halftime.

Lukmon Jimoh scored one more while Jacob Shola a goalkeeper but playing as an outfield added another goal in quick succession to make the score 3-2. Nigeria was reduced by a man for two minutes when Lukmon Jimoh fouled and Italian player and was given a blue card.

Italy seized the best of the two minutes and scored three goals to make the score 5-3.

With a minute left to play, Lukmon Jimoh scored twice to level score, 5 -5.

In the ensuing penalty, Nigeria won to leave score at 7 - 6 and got maximum three points.

Nigeria has qualified into the main group draw having amassed 9 points from three games.

Nigeria will square up with India and Phillipines on tomorrow afternoon with little to play for meanwhile team vice captain and the only lady in the team, Chioma Edoziem has promised on behalf of the team to play for Oluwaloni Ogunleye, John Auta and Seun Shoyemi.

Chioma said the team is pained at the disappointment of the players being unable to join the team due to flight hitch.
