Nigeria: Akpabio to Be Honoured!

Organisers of the ongoing Akpabio National Under-17 Boys and Girls soccer competition have said that they intend to honour eight sports personalities including the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio at the final scheduled to hold at the Uyo Township Stadium on December 9.

Rising from a crucial meeting held yesterday in Uyo, the central working committee of the Youth Sports Federation (YSFON), said that they resolved to honour such persons because of their contribution to the development of sports in the state with YSFON Merit Award (YMA) .

Recipients of the award include Governor Godswill Obot Akpabio for Developing & Promoting Sports in Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria , Mrs Helen Esuene, for promoting youth soccer, Dr. Anthony Udo, who is the Managing Director of Progenics Incorporated, for supporting youth soccer development, Senator Aloysius Etok, for donating the boys trophy and Obong Aniedi King, who donated the girls' trophy and Dr. Chris Ekong, for initiating the renovation of the Uyo Township Stadium.

In line for a post-humous award is the Late Uwem Ekarika, whose wife, Esther is expected to receive the award on his behalf and James Etokebe.

Meanwhile, the competition, which is taking place in four centres, kicked off yesterday with the opening ceremony attracting a horde of spectators, who thronged the Uyo Township stadium, to watch youths play soccer.

The final match is scheduled to hold December 9, a significant day, because it coincides with the 46th birth day celebration of Governor of Akwa Ibom State , Godswill Akpabio.

Apart form representing Nigeria in Norway Cup 2009, the winners and runners-up would also cart home cash prizes.

Air-Marshall Nsikak Eduok (Rtd) is also a co-sponsor of the tournament, having offered to accommodate visiting sports journalists across the country in his Ultra-Fit Hotel in Uyo.
