Abeokuta — Former Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Association, Coach Kasimawo Laloko, has described the banishment of the Enyimba Football Club, Aba as an "economic waste to both the club and the Nigerian Football League.
Speaking yesterday during a lecture of the State Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Week, Chief Laloko said that the banishment would definitely affect the economic fortune and balance of both the Club and the organizing body, the Nigeria Football League.
He then suggested that other forms of sanctions should be exploited other than banishment.Enyimba was recently banished from its Aba Township Stadium to Ilorin by the Nigeria Football League over assaults of its fans during a home match.
He said, "Eyinmba fans were usually unruly, but the referee who handled the match needed to have demonstrated more competence, credibility and integrity".
The veteran coach whose paper was titled: "Hooliganism in Sports: Causes and Effects on Sports Development" identified alcoholism, unemployment, poor and partial-officiating and disrespect to match officials as some of the causes of violence in football matches.
"If we are really serious about reducing or eradicating violent act or hooliganism on sports development, we must begin to catch them young. We must begin to educate and orientate our youths from their tender age. This is the only way of doing it, or else, we shall continue to witness violence in football matches."
