Liberia: Several Criminals to Be Deported

3 December 2008

It has now been confirmed that several Liberians who should have been deported for committing various crimes in the United States sometimes ago, will now face deportation today to this country.

Immigration commissioner, Chris Massaquoi, told newsmen yesterday in Monrovia that those expected to be deported have been convicted of committing various crimes in the United States. He said some of the crimes include gang rape, arson attack, armed robbery and fraud. He said they are 22; one female and 21 males.

He said the deportation was a matter of concern to this country especially so considering the acts for which these individuals are being deported. He said because of this, the government is taking all precautionary steps to ensure that those crimes committed are not repeated in this country.

Commissioner Massaquoi said there is an "operational plan which has been approved by the Justice Ministry regarding the issue. He said those who committed minor offences would be given to their parents, but those who committed heinous crimes would be in custody and thoroughly investigated before allowing them to leave.

When asked as to whether the current situation is an embarrassment to the government, the commissioner answered in the negative. He said people commit crimes all over and are punished for those acts.
