Pretoria — The Department of Foreign Affairs has reiterated its call to all South Africans travelling abroad to keep in touch with embassies and high commissions while overseas.
This, the department said, would help diplomatic staff deal with unexpected events such as the recent terror attacks in Mumbai and protests in Bangkok.
"The Minister, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, reiterates the call for all South Africans travelling abroad to register their presence with our embassies and or high commissions to enable our diplomatic staff to be able deal with whatever eventualities," the department said in a statement.
The department also confirmed that all South Africans unaccounted for in India have now been located and were safe.
Militants armed with automatic weapons and grenades attacked luxury hotels, hospitals and a famous tourist cafe in India's commercial capital Mumbai last week, killing scores of people.
Meanwhile, South African officials were also doing all they could to assist stranded passengers in Bangkok following recent demonstrations at the local International Airport. This as the South African Embassy in Thailand has since the beginning of the demonstrations at the airport, been inundated daily with calls from stranded South African passengers, seeking the assistance of the Embassy and its consular staff.
On the basis of such calls, the department said the embassy compiles lists of such stranded passengers and follows up with the necessary advise, support and consular assistance.
However, the Embassy said, they can only be of help to those South Africans who have made contact with the embassy to advise them of their plight.
In this regard, the department and the Embassy appealed to South Africans who are stranded to contact the Embassy in Thailand at + 662 659 2900 for assistance.
The Embassy has been advising South African passengers to also approach Thai Airways for further assistance to regional destinations that will allow them to transit to South Africa.
In addition, the Thai authorities have also been providing stranded passengers with accommodation and meals at designated hotels.
