South Africa: Quartey for Red Star

3 December 2008

Kaizer Chiefs' Ghanaian international centre-back Jonathan Quartey, has been invited for a week-long trial at former European Cup champions Red Star Belgrade and Amakhosi have granted permission.

Belgrade would like to see Quartey as soon as possible for five days, in which they will use him in a match situation and watch him in two training sessions.

That is all they need to make up their minds, having already been in South Africa to watch him play in the Soweto Derby and against SuperSport United recently.

Belgrade's Sporting Director, Illia Ilic, was in Mzansi to personally watch Quartey.

Chiefs received the invite and duly gave Quartey permission to go on trial. But the required paperwork for getting Quartey to Serbia is proving difficult.

"There are a lot of little difficulties in getting paperwork for an African to go into Serbia. It's frustrating, but we're doing all we can because they want Jonathan to leave as soon as possible," says the man facilitating the deal, Ivica Stankovic.

Stankovic praised Kaizer Chiefs for the professional manner in which they have handled the offer and the invite, and says due to this there is "a 90% chance" the entire deal happens.

The 1991 European Champions will long be remembered for producing players of a high technical calibre, who thrilled fans all around the world.

Should Quartey sign, he will join some of the most famous names in world soccer. Stars from Red Star's golden generation of the early nineties include midfielders Sinisa Mihajlovic, Robert Prosinecki and Dejan Savicevic, as well as renowned striker Darko Pancev.
