Nigeria: NFF Inspect Stadia for CAF Competition

3 December 2008

Officials of the Nigeria Football Federation are in Owerri, Imo State capital on the first leg of inspection of stadia and hotel facilities with which Nigeria flag-bearers intend to host continental matches next year.

"The Confederation of African Football has placed greater responsibilities on its member federations to diligently check on facilities that clubs are presenting for continental competitions and either approve or disapprove. We at the NFF do not want to be found wanting.

"We will check out the hotel and stadia facilities with which our four clubs campaigning in Africa next year intend to host their opponents. There will be no shortcut for any team. If your facilities do not meet up with required standards, you just have to play your matches in the capital city as stipulated by CAF," said NFF General Secretary, Bolaji Ojo-Oba.

The capital city in this case is Abuja.

NFF First Vice President Amanze Uchegbulam is leading the team on the inspection and last night, the Imo State Football Association chairman said: "We will be strict in our checks. It is time that our clubs and state governments learn to do the right things if they want to host continental matches on their home-grounds.

"CAF are increasingly becoming intolerant of unspeakable stadia and hotel facilities that some countries provide for its matches. If our clubs are found wanting on that score, it is the NFF that will be held responsible.
