Kampala — PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has described the late bishop, Amos Betungura, as a unifying factor between Anglicans and other religions.
He said this at a funeral service at St. James' Cathedral Ruharo in Mbarara town on Sunday. "He was a friend to all, regardless of creed. He has left behind a challenging legacy," Museveni said in his condolence message read by Mbarara municipality MP John Kigyagi.
Betungura, 81, died of prostate cancer on Friday at Mayanja Memorial hospital in Mbarara. Museveni said Uganda had lost one of her most experienced theologians, teachers, counsellors and writers.
He said his discussions on marriage, culture and Christian life inspired many and revived the Ankole culture.
Museveni also gave sh3m. The widow, Jolly, thanked the President for his support. Betungura wrote several books about the history of Ankole, marriage, children stories and translated several others into local languages.
The Archbishop of Church of Uganda, Luke Orombi, described Betungura as a hero. The late bishop is survived by three daughters and eight grandchildren.
He was buried at the Saint James Cathedral in Ruharo.
