Ghana: Off to a Good Start

3 December 2008

editorial

Yesterday, Tuesday December 2 2008,special voting in Election 2008 by security services personnel, media and other workers, who would be on duty on December 7 went off smoothly throughout the country.

ADM reporters, who were part of the special voting exercise, reported that there was no untoward event and the exercise served more or less as a dress rehearsal for the national voting which takes place on Sunday December 7 2008.

Agents of the political parties were present as well as local and foreign observers.

Ghana's elections are being followed keenly by the international community (see story on features page) because elections in parts of Africa have become more tragic self-destructive exercises than anything to do with democracy.

Indeed, the most recent example took place in Nigeria last weekend where local elections in the city of Jos ended in inter-communal violence in which scores of people lost their lives.

Ghana in the last decade has been held up as a symbol of stability, democracy, human rights, rule of law, good governance and modest success in economic management.

Sunday's elections are therefore crucial to either move the country forward in its development agenda or consign her into the basket case of failed African attempts at democracy.

A peaceful outcome is all that is needed on Sunday and no matter which political party gets elected, Ghana would certainly have proved a very important point, which can only be good news to her citizens and the rest of the world.
