Kampala — UGANDA is looking up to US president-elect Barack Obama to fund programmes to mitigate effects of climate change.
A member of Uganda's delegation to the UN Climate Change talks in Poland, Fred Machulu Onduri, said Obama's administration should end the current standoff between America and developing countries over climate change.
The conference is aimed at signing a new agreement by 2009. Countries are expected to sign a new treaty on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Onduri said: "We have taken a positive statement from president-elect Obama. We hope he is going to give proper attention to climate change."
He said Uganda would receive up to $3b out of the $170b budgeted for 48 least developed countries.
Obama, in a video shown at the conference, promised to reduce US emissions under a 10-year programme.
