Windhoek — Siemens has delivered the key electrical and information and communication technology component to Ohorongo Cement.

Ohorongo Cement, the first cement factory for Namibia, is under construction at a site between Otavi and Tsumeb.

German based Polysius AG, is constructing the plant on behalf of Schwenk Cement. Siemens did all the electrical systems for the plant. These include an 132kW gas isolated switch panel for the outside areas, an open-air-transformer station, distribution transformers, an 11kW idle power compensation, switch centres and the intelligent motor control centre.

Moreover, the system contains resource and low stress corrosion motors, variable strain, variable frequency (VVVF) impulsion, cables, lighting and grounding systems, a vacuum heavy-duty circuit breaker field, field instruments, and measurement and control technology.

Ohorongo Cement plans to start production by December 2010.

"We have confidently put our specialised knowledge, especially in the cement area, to the test. A determining factor in the commissioning of this project was our experience in client service and in timely executions of big and complex projects, as well as our skills. All this is complemented by offering integrated solutions at competitive prices," said Managing Director of Siemens Dr Armin Bruck.

Ohorongo Cement would operate at a capacity of 2 100 tonnes per day in meeting the highest technological standards.
