Kigali — Rwanda Athletics Federation (Raf) has named 20-man team for the Bujumbura international peace marathon scheduled for weekend in Burundi.
Among the athletes are Sylvain Rukundo (Police) and Epiphanie Nyirabame (Kamonyi) who participated in the Kampala international marathon last month.
APR athletics club has the highest number including; Rashid Safari, Fred Twahirwa, Eric Sebahire, Jean Baptista Simuceka, Godefrey Rutayisire, Mediatrice Nyirarangwa,Genesi Nyirahabimana, Angelline Nyiransabimana and Jeane D'Arc Mukakigeri.
Others are: Felix Ntirenganya (Police), Eric Mpazimpaka (Police), Philippe (Police), Sylvain Rukundo, Isidole Kayiranga(Ruhango), Martin Rwesandekwe(Kamonyi),JMV Uwajeneza (NAS) as well as Kamonyi trio of Cyliaque Ndayikengurukiye, Esperance Mukarugwiza and Adeline Musabyeyezu.
The purpose of Bujumbura Marathon is to raise awareness and advocate for peace in Burundi. The Marathon is divided into four major runs. Three races start and end at the Louis Rwagasore central Stadium in Bujumbura.
There will be a full marathon (42km), a half marathon (31 km), an amateur race (5km) and a 1.4km race for children. As part of the ceremonies, the construction of a synthetic athletics track in Bujumbura will be officially launched on the day of the Marathon of Peace.
