Host country Uganda yesterday got up to a good start in the 7th edition of the Africa cup of nations in military football. They beat guinea 3-1 in the opening encounter of the tournament. Uganda proved enterprising from the very beginning of the match mounting offensive upon offensive in the Guinea camp. They logically opened scores at the 31st minute through Jjingo Ibrahim after missing three glaring goal opportunities.

One would have expected Guinea to react to the goal but it was Uganda which still remained the master of the game with good ball circulation and winning all the duels. Two goals within the space of seven minutes were disallowed because of outside play as both teams parted at half time with Uganda maintaining their one goal lead.

Upon resumption of play, the Ugandans picked up from where they had left it, exercising superiority in the game and their efforts paid off again at the 52nd minute when they got a second goal through Kavuma Willy. Guinea reduced the tally at the 86th minute through a goal mouth tussle that was netted in by Amadou Conde. Uganda was to get a third goal through Ssernukuma Simon who hammered in a volley from about 25 metres at the 88th minute. Guinea's attempts to daint the goal post of Uganda were futile until the final whistle.

Speaking at the end of the match, the Ugandan coach said he fielded young players who are playing for the first time in the competition. He said the victory has spurred to emulate Cameroon's example by organizing and winning the competition. Meanwhile the coach of Guinea, Nabyl Laye Diawara, said despite the defeat, he was still confident that they are going to go far in the competition. "It was the same case two years ago in Yaounde, when Cameroon beat us in the first match but we still went to the second round of the competition", he said.
