Nigeria: Globacom Bags Another Award

4 December 2008

Lagos — Globacom emerged the biggest winner at the 2008 edition of the National Award for Marketing Excellence (NAME) organised by the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (NIMN).

The company was awarded the Best Supportive Corporate Organisation at the event held at the Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos. Globacom had last year emerged the Brand of the Year at the 2007 NAME Awards.

Deputy President of NIMN, Chief Sylva Emoekpre, who described Globacom's award as "the Peak of the Awards" said the company was the most outstanding winner at the event. "It is a special recognition for this young but great Nigerian brand. Glo has over the years been the most supportive not only of the institute's activities but also of the Nigerian people and enterprise."

Chairman of the NAME Award committee, Uche Aligbe, said the award aims "to encourage, identify, recognise and celebrate practitioners who show excellence in their practice within a given year". He explained that in arriving at the decision, all brands in Nigeria were grouped into functional categories and from all the categories, 22 were chosen as focus for 2008.

"A nationwide consumer research of 50,000 total respondents in 13 strategic locations was conducted by a reputable research organisation under a close check and audit by the institute. Responses were elicited on all elements of marketing from relevant consumers of each brand in each category. Such authentic field data was analysed to yield the nominees and winners of today," Aligbe explained.

Speaking to newsmen after receiving the award for the company, Globacom's Executive Director, Human Resources, Adewale Sangowawa, expressed delight at Globacom's emergence as the Most Supportive Corporate Organisation in Nigeria. He said that the NIMN award was one more testimony to the overwhelming success of Globacom in the country. Sangowawa added, the numerous awards Globacom had won in its five years of operation showed the faith of Nigerians in the company.

"Globacom's overall success in service delivery and product innovation gives it a clear edge in the industry," the executive director said.

He recalled that Globacom had only last week won five of the awards at stake at the Nigerian Information Telecommunications Technology Awards (NITTA 2008). The network was pronounced Rural Access Phone Service Provider of the Year, GSM Operator of the Year and the National Telephone Operator of the Year by the awards committee of NITTA, the highest telecoms quality and performance award in the country.
