BARELY three days after members of the senate committee on environment and ecology visited some gully erosion sites in Anambra State and promised to prevail on the Federal Government to do something about the devastation, their colleagues in the House of Representatives ended their two-day visit to the state yesterday with a warning that the menace must be given urgent attention to save further losses in the state.
While in the state, the committee visited 12 erosion sites at Nanka, Ekwulummili, Nnewi, Ozubulu, and Onitsha and concluded that there is need to declare a state of emergency in the South East before the problem gets out of hand.
Chairman of the committee, Mr. Duro Faseyi said what they saw in Anambra State was due to unjustifiable neglect which must be addressed as a matter of urgency.
"I want to assure you that as a responsive committee of the House, as we go from here, we will liaise with other concerned government agencies like the Ecological Fund and the Federal Ministry of Environment to ensure that something concrete is done about this disaster immediately", he said.
He however noted that there is need for people to make conscious efforts and sacrifices that would promote environmental friendly land use and agricultural practices and shun lifestyles capable of aggravating carbon emissions.
