Kampala — EIGHT-YEAR-OLD Mary Arinda Mwiine has shown that age is just a number, where singing is concerned.
The pupil of Sir Apollo Kaggwa Primary School has a six-track gospel album, The End of Life's Journey and has also featured as a backup vocalist and dancer for Sylvia Nvannungi.
The album's title track celebrates Jesus' mission on earth. The song trips and bounces along on simple but impressive keyboard melodies.
Arinda held a concert at the former Pride Theatre on December 2. It featured Pastor Wilson Bugembe, David Lule as well as Betty Nakibuuka and Baby Gloria. Children below nine years had free entry. She will also hold another concert at the Mbarara Social Centre on Christmas Day.
The daughter of Julius and Catherine Mwiine, Mary was singing before she could even talk. "From the time Mary was six months old, she would hum along to a specific song by ABBA," her father says.
With its simple but perfect melodies and vocal harmonies that one would not expect of a child her age, Mwine's album is a sign that this young talent is maturing by the day.
