Nigeria: CBN Begins Campaign Against Abuse of Naira in Awka

Awka-THE Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has begun the campaign against the abuse of the naira in Awka, Anambra State for the South East geo-political zone, with a warning that offenders would henceforth be handed over to security operatives.

CBN director of currency and branch operations, Mr. Ben Onyido who is leading top officials of the apex bank on the campaign said during courtesy calls on Governor Peter Obi and the traditional ruler of Awka, Obi Gibson Nwosu that it should be the concern of all Nigerians that the country's currency should be treated with the dignity and respect it deserves.

He said one of the consequences of the abuse is that it costs the nation so much to print new currencies, adding that if the naira was not abused, the country would spend less in printing the naira.

"We felt that the campaign to the South East is timely. At this time of the year, the country is already in a festive mood and people are expected to spend money and the issue is that they should spend the money the right way. Money should be given out the way it should and not by rumpling or spraying.

"In fact, it is not the punishment that goes with it that is important. We don't even want to emphasize that. The most important thing is to make Nigerians realize that this money belongs to all of us and that the printing of the currency note is funded from the national purse and the cost of printing could be saved through the promotion of the clean note policy. It is not our wish that anybody should be convicted. The emphasis should be on doing what is right.
