Nigeria: Haruna Ilerika is Dead, Lagos Govt Mourns

Haruna Ilerika, one of the stars of Nigerian football passed on yesterday.Lagos State Government has described his death as shocking.

Alhaji Haruna Ilerika was the Vice Chairman of Lagos State Football Association (LSFA).

He was one of the players that made Stationery Stores the team to beat in the good days of Nigerian football.

Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Barrister Opeyemi Bamidele in a statement issued from London, where he is attending to a state function along with the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), noted that the ex-Green Eagles player passed on at 4 a.m Thursday morning.

Bamidele commiserated with the members of his immediate and extended family, board, management and staff of Lagos State Sports Council, just as he condoled with the sporting community in Nigeria.

The Commissioner noted that Ilerika worked hard for the development of football both at the grass-root and at national level as well as sports in general. He added that Haruna Ilerika began and ran his entire football career in Lagos.

He emphasized that his contributions in his hey days while playing football at inter-school level, national and at the international levels would forever remain ever green in the history of sports in Nigeria.

Bamidele noted that in the last six years, Ilerika has been involved in the management of sports in Lagos State on a daily basis, serving as a member and Vice Chairman of Lagos State Football Association (LSFA).

"He also served as the Chairman of Management Committee, Kudirat Abiola Freedom Square (Evans Square), until his appointment as a member of the Lagos State Sport Council, the highest sports administration body in the state", he stated.

Bamidele further said that the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) has directed the Lagos State Sports Council to liaise with the family of Alhaji Haruna Ilerika to give him a befitting burial, details of which would be released through the office of the Honourable Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Social Development.
