Angola: U.S. Officer Pleased With Democracy in Country

Luanda — The US deputy commander for Africa, Mary Carlin Yates, Thursday in Luanda, expressed satisfaction at the state of evolution of democracy in Angola.

Mary Carlin Yates said so at the end of a meeting with officials of the second and third commissions of the National Assembly (Angolan Parliament), that deals with foreign affairs, international cooperation, Angolan communities abroad, defence, security and internal order.

She said she was so encouraged by the evolution of democracy in Angola.

Mary Carlin Yates explained that, among other matters, she exchanged views with the Angolan MPs about the possible ways for cooperation between the two countries.

The USAfricom deputy commander who is in Luanda since Wednesday is to meet Friday with Angolan Foreign minister, Assunção dos Anjos, with the deputy minister of National Defence, Cândido dos Santos, and with the deputy chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, gen. Nunda.

The visit of Mary Carlin Yates will end on Saturday, with a press conference at Luanda's "4 de Fevereiro" international Airport.

The officer is responsible for USAfricom plans and programmes associated with health, humanitarian aid, demining, disasters, security sector's reform and peace operations.

Mary Carlin Yates is also responsible for awareness campaigns, strategic communication and USAfricom partnership building.
