Namibia: HIV-Aids Implementers to Descend On Windhoek Next Year

Windhoek

5 December 2008

About 1 700 HIV-AIDS implementers from all over the world are scheduled to hold a meeting in the capital from 10 to 14 June next year.

The gathering is aimed at sharing best practices and lessons learned in the fight against the AIDS pandemic.

The meeting, to be held under the theme: "Optimising the Response: Partnerships for Sustainability", is further aimed at widely disseminating best practices and lessons learned during the implementation of HIV-AIDS programmes with a focus on enhancing the quality of the programmes as well as promoting co-ordination among partners.

The public relations officer of the US Embassy in Windhoek, Ray Castillo, who is part of the organisers in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Social Services, said in a media statement issued yesterday that the theme focuses on two of the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief's ongoing priorities.

He said those priorities include the importance of the partnership and the search for sustainable solutions in the worldwide fight against HIV-AIDS.

He explained that through technical presentations and discussions, the meeting will facilitate an open dialogue about future directions for HIV-AIDS programmes, adding that there will be a strong emphasis on highlighting best implementation practices and identifying barriers to successful treatment, care and prevention.

According to him, by selecting Namibia for this important meeting, the international community is recognising the success the country has had in its fight against the AIDS pandemic.
