Ilorin — Ahead of 2011 elections, the Supreme Council for Shariah, Kwara State branch at the weekend faulted the purported plan by some members of the ruling Peoples Democractic Party (PDP) in the state to present a woman as the 2011 governorship candidate.
It said such a plan was against the shariah law which forbids leadership by women.
This was contained in a statement issued after its one-day seminar held in Ilorin. A copy of which was made available to THISDAY said that, women carried out a very prestigious and enviable role in the society but not to the extent of taking leadership .
According to the statement signed by the Vice Chairman of the council in the state, Sheikh Moshood Ibrahim, there was speculation that a political party in the state was planning to present woman governor in the next election, this is against the Shariah in Islam.
He said , "we therefore vehemently oppose this plan in Kwara State where over 80 per cent are muslims come 2011 as being contemplated and bandied about by some members of the ruling party in the state".
On the delay in the passage of shariah law bill, the council asked the state House of assembly to expedite action on the bill in order to hasten its implementation in the state.
Sheikh Ibrahim said that, it was highly disheartening that, for the past four years that the bill had been presented to the state House of Assembly, it was yet to see the light of the day.
They noted that the inter and intra party crisis ravaging the nation's political parties was due to the absence of the usage of provisions of the Holy Quran.
The Council therefore appealed to the state house of assembly to look into the shariah law bill in order to give it quick deliberations and its subsequent passage into law in the state.
