Nigeria: Sharia Council Moves Against PDP in Kwara

Following the ongoing power struggle in Kwara State ahead of 2011 elections, the Supreme Council for Sharia in the state has rejected the alleged plan by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state to present a woman as the next governorship candidate of the party in the next election because Sharia law forbid women leadership in any guise.

The council in a statement issued by its vice chairman Sheikh Moshood Ibrahim after its one-day seminar, in Ilorin warned that the party should not do anything that could set the state on religious crisis stressing that women could assume any other roles but definitely not leadership.

It should be recalled that the governor, Dr Bukola Saraki and her younger sister Senator Gbemisola Saraki-Fowora in the recent time are alleged to be on war path over the desire of the Senator to rule the state in 2011, a development which though has been denied by the governor's media team.

The SSG, a member of the House of Representatives, a local government chairman and a liaison officer to Ifelodun Local Government were largely affected in the purported in house bickering, but the state leadership of the party alluded anti-party activities for suspending the House of Representatives member while the government accused the council boss and SSG of corrupt practices.

Meanwhile, the statement which stated that there were speculations round the state that a political party in the state is planning to present woman governor in the next election, saying that this is against the Sharia in Islam stressed, "We therefore vehemently oppose this plan in Kwara State where over 80 per cent are Muslims come 2011 as being contemplated and bandied about by some members of ruling party in the state."

On the delay in the passage of Sharia law bill in the state, the council asked the state house of assembly to expedite action on the bill in order to hasten its implementation in the state.

Sheikh Ibrahim said that it was highly disheartening that, for the past four years that bill has been presented to the state House of Assembly, it is yet to see the light of day adding that the inter- and intra-party crisis ravaging the nation's political parties was due to the absence of the usage of provisions of the Holy Quran.
