South Africa: Great to Beat Chiefs - Arendse

8 December 2008

Santos defender Wayne Arendse and his teammates celebrated as if winning a Cup Final after their 2-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday night.

There were a couple of factors which would have attributed to the jubilant mood on the field when the final whistle blew.

Firstly, the players appeared to be in a state of disbelief after Amakhosi had hit the woodwork twice in the final 10 minutes, the second occasion signalling the end of the game.

"After we scored our second goal, we knew they would keep coming; that they would come blazing at us for the rest of the game, but somehow we managed to hold on," Arendse told KickOff.com.

Secondly, the packed house at the Athlone Stadium, consisting of a majority of Amakhosi supporters, gave the match a Cup Final feel to it.

"It was great to achieve victory in front of home supporters, but obviously a large amount of the fans at the stadium belonged to Chiefs, so it was also nice to win in front of them."

And to cap it all off, it was Santos' third win on the trot, a run which has seem them shoot up the Absa Premiership standings to seventh position - it was only a few weeks ago that rumours were rife that coach David Bright's job was on the line.

"It felt really good to win; we went into the match looking for all three points and that's what we got.

"We now have to make sure we are not complacent when we face AmaZulu, we want to go into the Christmas break in a respectable position on the League table," said Arendse, who was superb in central defence for the People's Team.
