Gabi Khumalo

10 December 2008

Pretoria — The Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality has managed to meet the national water target of providing basic water services to over 43 000 households by December 2008.

To mark its achievement, the municipality will on Friday open the last tap at the Makgoba Sebothoma Centre in Temba.

Municipal spokesperson Console Tleane said one of the milestones in terms of realising human rights for its residents was the provision of basic water.

He said for the city the provision of basic services and promotion of service delivery was the expression of adherence to and promotion of the values of the human rights ethos.

"All residents in the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality have access to water, either in their households or within 200 metres from the household.

"Since 2006, over 24 informal settlements have been formalised, creating the possibilities for putting up the water and other basic services infrastructure," Mr Tleane said.

On Friday, the city will be highlighting some of the achievements that the city has made since its inception in 2000.

Some of the achievements since March 2006 include 46 000 new houses with electricity, 160 creches supported citywide and 4 155 title deeds registered.

Executive Mayor Dr Gwen Ramokgopa joined by the Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry Lindiwe Hendricks will take part in the celebration.

Addressing the media in Pretoria last month, Dr Ramokgopa said since 2006, the municipality has spent R434 million on free basic services to poor households. She said that 43 366 residents in the municipality had access to piped water resulting in 97.1 percent of access to connected water.

According to the mayor, most people in the city are now able to access water in their homes or within a reasonable distance and 12 000 households have sanitation.
