Zambia: Church Pledges - We'll Continue Working With State

11 December 2008

THE Catholic Church in Northern Province has pledged to continue working with the Government in addressing social problems confronting the nation.

Archbishop of Kasama, James Spaita said the Church was ready to work with President Rupiah Banda's administration in addressing the many problems facing the country.

The Archbishop made the commitment when Northern Province Minister, Charles Shawa paid a courtesy call on him at his office in Kasama.

He said the Church would continue playing an active role, especially in the provision of health and education services, because the Government alone could not manage to resolve all the problems the country faces.

He said the Church felt duty bound to help the Government in educating the young generation.

Archbishop Spaita added that it was also the duty of the Church to pray for those in leadership so that God could grant them wisdom on how to manage the affairs of the nation.

He observed that leadership was challenging, hence the need for the Church to always pray for leaders so that they could meet the aspirations of the people.

Speaking earlier, Mr Shawa commended the Church for the role it had been playing in the affairs of the nation.

Mr Shawa said the Government regarded the Church as a partner in development, adding that his administration would work towards strengthening that partnership.

The minister said the Government was indebted to the Catholic Church for its contributions, especially in the education and health sectors.

He appealed to the Church to continue preaching the message of reconciliation, peace and unity, which the late president Levy Mwanawasa advocated in his last days.

He said since the elections were over and a new president has been elected, there was need for the nation to unite in the interest of achieving development.-ZANIS
