13 December 2008

Kampala — THE National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders in Kalangala District should declare the funds they get from the party headquarters if they are to be considered credible, the party secretary general has said.

Amama Mbabazi, also the security minister, said that it would be unfortunate to hear

misunderstandings erupting amid the Kalangala NRM leadership because of funds sent to run party activities.

"Declare the logistics we send to you to the party supporters, to give them morale to protect our votes and maintain the party seats not only in Parliament, but everywhere in the district."

Mbabazi was last Thursday addressing the leaders in Bujumba Constituency at Ssese Habitat Beach ahead of the by-elections for the area Member of Parliament scheduled for January 7.

The Bujumba parliamentary seat fell vacant when Prof Muyanda Mutebi dragged the elected MP Fred Badda to court accusing him of rigging the 2006 election. Badda who had been elected on the NRM party ticket is still holding the party flag. He is contesting with Muyanda Mutebi (Independent) and DP's Joseph Kakooza.

Mbabazi who was accompanied by the party deputy secretary general, Dorothy Hyuha, said that although the NRM secretariat was releasing some logistics to party branches, the work should be voluntary.

"The little funding we release is meant to assist you carry our candidates' campaigns efficiently," Mbabazi said.

He urged the district party leaders to be vigilant during the coming by-elections and to protect the party candidate's votes.
