Oxfam representative to a one-day national committee gender based violence meeting held at the presidential lounge national stadium in Freetown Friday stated that women were still being deprived of their rights in the country.
Konima Bobor Kamara said women were not slaves, adding that they have the right to play pivotal roles in society as role models and respectable citizens in the country.
She said sexual abuse and exploitation constitute a crime, suggesting that that it was an offence for which an accused could be liable to conviction and punishment.
Haja Musu Kandeh, minister of social welfare, gender and children's affairs said her ministry was working very hard to sort of emancipate such deprived women. She called on men to respect women.
Kandeh urged parents to take care of their siblings and protect them from all forms of sexual abuse.
Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, director of society for democratic initiatives said there were legal barriers that impede women not to express themselves in courts.
"Women are hardly allowed to express their views on certain issues," he pointed out and warned against children being allowed to watch pornographic movies.
