Angola: Pavilion of Sporting Do Bié Re-Inaugurated

15 December 2008

Kuito — The minister of Assistance and Social Welfare, João Baptista Kussumua, on the weekend re-inaugurated the multi-purpose pavilion and the theatre cinema of the Sporting Club of Bié.

Both infrastructures are completely equipped and furnished with modern technology, so that users can carry out sports, cultural and recreational activities with fewer difficulties.

The "T-Angola" construction company was in charge of the rehabilitation and expansion works of the pavilion and of the theatre cinema in a two-year period, with a budget estimated at USD three million.

At the occasion, the director for sports in the southern Bié province, Carlos Ulombe, stressed that the local government has been making efforts to recover sports infrastructures, so as to contribute to the development of various sports in the region.

The official said that the pavilion of Sporting do Bié, before being destroyed by the armed conflicts that ravaged the country after the 1992 elections, was considered as the second biggest nationwide, and the province hosted various national tournaments, such as basketball, handball, roller hockey, among others.

After these structures, the management board of Sporting do Bié might benefit soon from a fully rehabilitated football field, to be called the "Eucalyptus Stadium".

The provincial governor, Cândida Celeste da Silva, asserted that the re-opening of these undertakings in this region of the country is an added value for the population, which was long desired by sporting agents and might ease the practising of various sports, cultural and recreational activities.

Minister João Baptista Kussumua said that the government will continue working in order to restore infrastructures that were destroyed by the war and sports structures shall also be part of the plan.
