Angola: Part of Luanda/Viana/Cabolombo Highway Open

15 December 2008

Luanda — Part of Luanda/Viana express road subway, at intersection with Cacuaco/Viana/Cabolombo highway, is open to traffic, despite lacking some details for the conclusion of the infrastructure.

Angop learnt Monday that only the right side of the tunnel towards Viana is being used in the two lanes by the vehicles with maximum of 8 metres high, whereas the opening of another side towards Luanda is conditioned to the asphalt.

Based at "quilómetro 25" locality, the subway is 20 metres wide in each lane, 44 metres long and about 8 metres high.

The concrete-made structure will have double-purpose with subway for express road and bridge for peripheral highway.

Worth USD 42 million euros, Luanda/Viana express road starts from Independence Square and ends in Viana district, about 30 km. The project that started being implemented in May 2007 will be concluded by the end of 2009.

The construction of this road is in the light of Government Programme of Structuring Roads and Tertiary Rehabilitation of the country's capital. The works are in charge of Odebrechet, Andrade Gutierrez, and the consortiums MotaEngil, Monte Adriano and Soares da Costa contractors.

In addition to allow the circulation between central part of Luanda and Viana district, the 30 metre-wide express road, will also ease the connections to the districts of Kilamba Kiaxi and Cacuaco, as well as to the provinces of Bengo, Kwanza Norte, Kwanza Sul and Malanje.
