Pampers, a baby care expert, is partnering with the UNICEF to launch a public-private campaign, aimed at supporting the Ghana government to improve Vitamin A coverage in the country.
On December 16, P&G West Africa, manufacturers of Pampers, in partnership with UNICEF, kick off the Vitamin A initiative 1 Pack = 2 Vitamin A capsules in Accra.
For every large or Active Baby Pack of Pampers bought, P&G will donate 2 Vitamin A Capsules to the Government of Ghana, through UNICEF.
This campaign aims to raise over 400,000 Vitamin A capsules, to benefit over 200,000 children in Ghana.
Vitamin A deficiency affects more than 100 million children globally, and is responsible for every one in four deaths of children under five, in countries and communities where the problem exists.
Vitamin A is essential for the functioning of the immune system, and children, who receive Vitamin A, increase their resistance to disease and their chances for survival, growth and development improve.
Pampers' partnership with UNICEF is a long term commitment, as evidenced by its global campaign with UNICEF, 1 Pack = 1 Vaccine.
This campaign has raised more than 50 million vaccines for UNICEF, and aims at eliminating maternal and new born deaths due to tetanus by 2012.
The benefits of Vitamin A consumption for children include reduced risk of death from measles by about 50%, from diarrhoea by about 40%, and overall mortality by 25-35%. Vitamin A is thus as effective as immunisation or oral rehydration in mortality prevention. For mothers, it reduces the risk of disease during childbirth.
P&G's corporate social responsibility platform, Live Learn and Thrive, focuses on assisting the development of children in need, between the ages of 0 - 13, by giving them a healthy start in life, providing access to education, and access to programmes that help build their self-esteem, social skills and empower them.
Over 50 million children benefit from the Live Learn and Thrive program around the world annually.
The 1 Pack = 2 vitamin A capsules campaign is also being implemented in Algeria, Tunisia, Syria and Iraq.
Overall, almost 1 million children will be reached in these five countries, and more than 1.8 million Vitamin capsules will be donated through this partnership with UNICEF.
Pampers will continue to collaborate with UNICEF, to ensure the healthy development of babies around the world.
