The annual ASPAMDA Football Competition tagged Fidelity Cup is aimed at discovering talents for the various national teams to represent the country, Assistant General Manager/Regional Manager, Lagos Mainland, Simon Peter Oparah has disclosed.
He made this disclosure Saturday during the closing ceremony of the 2008 edition of the competition which took place at the ASPAMDA play ground, International Trade Fair Complex in Lagos.
"The aim actually is to create excitement in the life of people and also to motivate people who will come out and represent Nigeria. It also to help them make a living out of football and become professionals footballers abroad, " he said.
In the final, Zone F emerged champions of the competition after a hard fight against the Zone D, winning 3-0 via penalties. The match had ended goalless after 90 minutes and in the resultant penalty shoot out, Zone F converted three while Zone D failed to convert any.
Zone F were played in the final for the second time and Zone D for the first time. The event was attended by traders from all parts of Lagos, football scouts and top officials of Fidelity Bank as well as people from all walks of life.
Speaking after receiving the trophy, captain of Zone F, Uche Ayemene, expressed delight for the victory and attributed it to faith saying he was so sure they would win.
"I am so delighted for our team being the winner of the this year's competition. Before the penalty, I so believed that we would win and with God on our side, we made it. I am so happy," he enthused.
The coach of the losing side, Michael Alhassan however, said that his team did their best and would try and to be champions next year.
