CHAIRMAN of the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law, Comrade Emeka Umeagbalasi has criticised the roles being played by many Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) operating in the country, arguing that most of them exist sorely for the grants they get from international donors and the seminars accompanying it.
In a paper he delivered as part of activities marking the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, UDHR, in Onitsha, Umeagbalasi, who was former chairman of the Civil Liberties Organization (CLO) in Anamabra State, observed that any NGO that is not engaged in research has no business operating as an NGO.
"The Part C of the Corporate Affairs Commission contains about thirty thousand non- governmental organizations, which include community-based organizations, faith-based groups, health-based organizations, social organizations, human rights organizations, pro-democracy organizations, etc.
