Nigeria: Jos Mayhem 2008 - Matters Arising

opinion

I have to listened to comments and read articles by some concerned Nigerians both on the print and electronic media, on the 'madness' tagged 'Jos Mayhem 2008'. As a stake holder and also a victim, I have decided to use this very opportunity to comment on some fundamental issues arising from the despicable sectarian crisis that engulfed Jos recently.

In fact, during the crisis, the security agencies, the Police in particular arrested 565 persons. Out of this number 38 of them were juveniles, when you subtract 38 from 565 you will have 527 left. Out of this number 28 of them were the so-called 'indigenes ', while the remaining 499 were the so-called "settlers' of Jos North LGA.

When one takes a look right from Gada biyu to Zaria road, and Farin Gada via Mile 7, over 200 vehicles (assorted), with 20 filling stations and over 100 houses belonging to the 'settlers' were burnt. In addition, eleven Islamic Schools were burnt down with Al-bayan recording the highest casualty of 20 pupils, who perished inside the inferno. Now, the questions that are begging for answer are; where were the Plateau State Government and the Security agencies when this ugly, unpleasant and unholy act were been carried out? Or does the Plateau State Government and the Security agencies wants us to believe that it was the 28 'indigenes' that were arrested so far that carried out the barbaric act? Or is it the 'settlers' that set their properties ablaze, with a view of making profit out of the ashes?

The most annoying aspect of the matter is that, during the crisis the Federal Government College Jos was not spared, in fact, the school Mosque and the Imam's official residence was burnt down completely. Had it been the perpetrators were able to trace the Muslim students in the school, they would have equally set them ablaze. The Vice Principal a Muslim who was recently posted to the school was very lucky to have escaped alive. It may interest the reader to note that, during the 2001 'madness', the same FGC Mosque and the Imam's house was also burnt by the same arsonist. Although, some of the students of the school have identified one of the staff, (non-academic), an indigene who organizes and connives with some unscrupulous and undesirable elements to carry out the criminal act.

The Federal Ministry of Education, owners of the school, should as a matter of urgency, constitute an investigation team to visit the school with a view of identifying the person or group who masterminds the evil act, right from the Principal to the circular bearer. Wonders they say shall never end! The Plateau crisis this time around is taking an ugly dimension, even schools are not spared. The compatibility of our children in the school should not be compromised due to our ethno-religio-triba-amnesia.

Governor Jang's hawkish approach to the crisis was not the best and did not help the matter. In a state wide broadcast, Jang ordered the security agencies under the state (prior to the arrival of the Federal security), to shoot at-site, in other words, open fire on innocent citizens including children. With these actions, one may tend to believe that Jang is already a befuddled individual.

It is a well known fact that due to selfish, political and economic reasons, Plateau State Government refused to make public the Justice Niki Tobi Judicial Commission of enquiry into the 2001 'madness' tagged the Plateau Secretarian crisis. Up till this moment, no white paper on the findings has been released by the State Government.

Based on the above enumerated fact, I am calling on the Federal Government to set up an Independent Judicial Commission of enquiry into the November 2008 Mayhem. The people, especially the so-called 'settlers' have lost confidence on the leadership of Gov. Jonah Jang. You can not get justice from an umpire who is already dingy and reversed-bias.

The state Government has already slammed charges on those that were arrested during the crisis, these include, un-lawful possession of fire-arms, looting, arson and maiming, other charges are: homicide and complicity. Now, what will be the faith of the juvenile among the suspects? Are the above charges also going to be slammed on them? How long are they going to stay in Jos prisons? In as much as I don't support violence in any form nor do I believe in it as a solution to any problem, the Plateau State Government and the security agencies will be doing a great service to Plateau people and Nigerians as a whole if they apprehend or arrest the remaining 'indigenous' un-lawful possessors of fire-arms, looters, arsonists and maimers etc. And also slam the charges on them. It is practically impossible for someone to believe that only 28 'indigenous' suspects carried out the killing of thousands of people and destroying properties worth billions of Naira within a short period of time. Unless if the state Government and the Security agencies wants to be economical with the truth.

The remnant of the crisis is that Jos as a whole is fast becoming a ghost town, just as Gov. Babangida Aliyu of Niger State has rightly pointed out. People are leaving Jos en-masse on daily basis for the fear of unknown. Perhaps, Gov. Jang and his kitchen cabinet will agree with me that no reasonable investor will establish his business in a crisis prone atmosphere, where the security of lives and property are not secured and guaranteed. Since the crisis, schools in Jos and its environs have closed down indefinitely because fear of the unknown. The children could not write their exams because of this ugly incidence. Presently, both the children of the so-called 'settlers' and the 'indigenes' are at home. Now, If I may ask; to whose benefit?

Since David Jang, as a Gov. has nothing to offer the people to improve their welfare and living conditions. At least, he should allow us enjoy the relative peace on the Plateau. Jang should not destroy the State for the generation yet unborn, and indeed future generation. How does Jonah Jang wants to be remembered? May be, as a kakistocratic ruler ever on the Plateau, who came and sowed the seed of discord among the people. What a hapless situation for the Plateau citizens!

Finally, if Jang was sincere in making an indigenous chairman for Jos North LGA, apart from the Hausa-Fulani's, there are other minority tribes like the Anaguta's, the Afizere's and host of others. Why didn't he pick any of them? Well, time will tell.
