South Africa: 'Chippa' Not for Big Games - Gamondi

16 December 2008

Midfielder Steve Lekoelea may be slowly picking up the pieces of his football career with the action from a few games this season but his coach Miguel Gamondi believes that the former Orlando Pirates star is no longer a factor in big games.

Lekoelea has been struggling for game time since joining Stars last season but after playing a few games the hope of regaining the old magic that made him a household name at the Buccaneers a few years ago began to come alive again.

However, while soccer fans were expecting to see the Sebokeng-born midfielder in action at Super Stadium when the Tycoons took on Mamelodi Sundowns at the weekend, Gamondi opted to leave him behind when the team travelled to Atteridgeville on Sunday.

Speaking to KickOff.com, Gamondi had his own explanation as to why he decided not to feature 'Chippa'.

"I wonder why the media always comes with questions surrounding Lekoelea at the club. I have other players in the team that you can ask me about.

"Please, don't get me wrong' I'm not taking anything away from Steve, he's a good player but to me he is no longer for big games like that one we played against Sundowns.

"He came on and played well against Santos but still I don't regard him good enough to play for a full 90 minutes. I prefer to play him for 20, or maybe 30 minutes, depending on the opposition," Gamondi added.
